Newcastle came through their FA Cup replay against Oxford United by the skin of their teeth on Tuesday night.
The Magpies were two goals to the good before the hosts came back and forced the match into extra-time.
Joelinton found himself a rare goal, sticking the ball past the goalkeeper with confidence that has often been lacking from the Brazilian after netting three times this term.
However, he was brought off after just 37 minutes which later prompted journalist Andrew Musgrove into asking why a player like Elias Sorensen wasn’t on the bench with Newcastle lacking options.
It was a claim that sparked debate amongst the Newcastle fanbase on Twitter as some supporters were quick to wonder why he wasn’t in the squad, even going as far as saying he should play over Joelinton.
That claim is a bit of a strong one considering the 20-year-old has only just returned from a loan spell with League 2 Carlisle.
However, it sums up Newcastle’s struggles in front of goal that some are wanting an unproven youngster to dislodge Joelinton and finally get his chance.
Further comments centred around the standard of football he’d been playing at and why he was still at the club if he couldn’t be trusted to feature against League One opposition.
Sorensen failed to score in eight appearances for Carlisle this season, starting just one match in the process.
He was loaned out to Blackpool in the third tier of English football last term but he only appeared once, again failing to score.
Having gained experience against sides of similar calibre to Oxford United in the last two seasons, it is rather strange that he wasn’t at least on the bench. That being said, his goal record speaks for itself.
Whether Sorensen gets an opportunity between now and the end of the season remains to be seen but after returning from Carlisle, he’s put himself in the frame.
The striker scored for Newcastle’s U23s on Monday afternoon so if he can continue that form, there are reasons to suggest he should get a chance to prove himself under Steve Bruce.
Meanwhile, one Newcastle player was on the end of some rather unsavoury words on Tuesday night…
