da leao: Speaking to Sky Sports (as quoted by The Manchester Evening News), Gary Neville has delivered a damning verdict on the “problem” in midfield Manchester United have.
What did he say?
The Red Devils did not sign a single midfielder in the summer transfer window, and have since seen the likes of Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay pick up crucial injuries. And on Sunday afternoon against Sheffield United, United had to make do with a duo of Fred and Andreas Pereira.
Speaking after their 3-3 draw against the Blades, Neville insisted it is an area in which the club desperately need to strengthen in, and that they simply don’t have enough quality in that position at the moment.
He said: “The midfield’s just a problem for United full stop, let’s be clear about it. Even with Scott McTominay in it it’s a problem. They haven’t strengthened in that area, obviously (Paul) Pogba’s injured. It’s a problem for them and it’s just not good enough, the midfield just doesn’t have good enough quality. They need a striker, they need two midfield players, they need a left-back – they need five or six signings.
“They can’t do that until January and obviously the summer but the midfield will not go away as a problem for Manchester United just because of an injury. It’s a problem full stop – it needs strengthening.”
Priorities
Amid reports in recent weeks suggesting that Manchester United are looking to sign a new striker in January – names like Mario Mandzukic and Callum Wilson have been linked – the Red Devils must seriously consider what should be their priority when the transfer window opens.

Clubs are unlikely to let go of their prized assets mid-way through a season, and so big-money deals are always going to be difficult to pull off. Solskjaer must weigh up whether their need for a midfielder is so desperate that they would even make do with someone who is maybe second or third choices in their shortlist of targets. But with their struggles this season – they currently find themselves in ninth in the Premier League table – United would be wise to sign both a striker and a midfielder in January.
Meanwhile, find out how Scott McTominay has quickly become one of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s most trusted lieutenants.
